The Madness of Art

My friend, Carolyn Fehsenfeld, a brilliant painter and teacher, gave me a card with the following Henry James quote. “We work in the dark – we do what we can – we give what we have. Our doubt is our passion and our passion is our task. The rest is the madness of art.”

As I prepare for a week long watercolor workshop with my father and pick away at my series, Last Apartment, I constantly push against a wall of doubts. Will I be able to let go and let the paint lead me? Will I have the courage to paint what I feel? Will I dare try things that might not work?

Each time I face the blank canvas or the page, I wonder if I will find a way to express the passion, hurt, confusion and joy that I feel and want to share with others. Like you, I will never know unless, I dare to work “in the dark” and trust the process.

Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.
As soon as you trust yourself, you will know how to live.
Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Willing is not enough; we must do.
